Dr. Joachim Krohn was appointed Deputy Scientific Director of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Research Centre Geesthacht in 1995. His responsibilities include managing the scientific staff at the centre, planning and programme controlling, heading the departments Public Relations and European Projects, and managing the school laboratory.
Before becoming Deputy Scientific Director, Dr. Krohn served for two years as Assistant to the Scientific Management Board at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Research Centre.
Dr. Krohn began his scientific career at the University of Hamburg in 1969, where he studied oceanography, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics and physics, graduating with a degree in oceanography in 1975. As a research associate at the University of Hanover, he then worked on a German Research Foundation (DFG) project on "Tidal Friction and the Earth's Rotation", which he further pursued at the University of Hamburg from 1978 onward. He gained his doctorate with a thesis on the subject "Numerical Modelling of Global Tides with Variable Grid Resolution" in 1983.
After receiving his doctorate, Dr. Krohn joined Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht as a member of the scientific staff at the former Institute of Physics. During this period, Dr. Krohn developed numerical models for use in coastal and estuary research. He is a member of numerous scientific associations and the advisory councils of a number of scientific bodies.
