Water Analysis

By conducting analyses of different types of water, the students learn basic chemistry skills and procedures.

The students perform the experiments in pairs. The course begins with very simple tasks, such as pH-value measurements, the use of test strips, and testing for metal ions. Following purely qualitative analysis methods, the students proceed to quantitative examinations. In a final step, the students determine the concentration of various metal ions. The experiments are jointly evaluated, compared and theoretically interpreted.

The practical course is geared towards students from all types of school (fifth form and up). Our experience has shown that the majority of students are only able to effectively benefit from such a practical course if they at least attend fifth form. Due to the changes currently being made to the last three school years in Germany, several German states are offering introductory chemistry courses at an earlier stage.

To make sure that course attendance is beneficial to your students, you should do the following:

Carefully prepare your students for their visit to the laboratory. The success of the course is at risk if the students merely expect to take part in a school trip without any instruction.

The students should have completed an introductory chemistry class so that they have already acquired the requisite basic knowledge, skills and thought processes.

Since you are better acquainted with your students’ traits, we ask that you assist us during the course.
