Overview of instruments

Sans-2

Small-angle scattering instrument SANS-2

SANS-2 is mainly dedicated to neutron small-angle scattering studies of precipitates, clusters, interfaces, grain sizes, magnetic structures etc. in materials like metals, ceramics, polymers and colloids using cold non-polarised and polarised neutrons (fig.1). A special feature is that all components which define the sample environment are movable on air cushions. The sample environment area is variable from a few mm up to 2.5 m length. Thus SANS-2 is the most variable instrument for small angle scattering at GeNF.

Reflectometer for polarised neutrons PNR

The reflectometer PNR is located at the end of NG-2u at beamline 8 and is supplied with cold neutrons. A neutron velocity selector allows to select the neutron wavelength with a resolution of 5%(fig.1).

Nero

Neutron Reflectometer NeRo

The new Neutron Reflectometer NeRo has been built at the former location of TOREMA 2. The instrument is designed for measurements of thin film systems including polymer and magnetic samples using cold non-polarised neutrons with high resolution. Optionally, polarised neutrons are useable.

Dcd

Double Crystal Diffractometer DCD

The DCD instrument, of type of a Bonse-Hart camera, with an extremely high angular resolution of 0.5 µrad is used for ultra small-angle neutron scattering (USANS) experiments. It allows the detection of microscopic inhomogenities in materials in the size range 0.03 µm to 24 µm.

Ares

Diffractometer for the analysis of residual stresses ARES

Residual stresses are present in many technologically relevant materials and components and can have detrimental influences on load carrying capacity as well as life time under service conditions. Therefore, knowledge of residual stresses can be crucial for the development of components and production techniques like e.g. welding. Neutrons offer the possibility to measure residual strains deep inside materials non-destructively. Thus, they are a unique tool for the engineer dealing with residual stresses.

Tex

Neutron texture diffractometer TEX-2

TEX-2 is a conventional neutron four-circle-diffractometer which has been optimised for texture investigations on different types of polycrystalline material (fig.1). Texture is defined as the orientation distribution of all crystallites of a polycrystalline material with respect to a well known sample orientation. The importance of a texture is given by two facts. First the anisotropy of polycrystalline materials influences their behaviour with thermomechanical processing, such as forging, extruding, rolling annealing etc.. Depending on the crystal structure, each individual crystal that forms the polycrystalline aggregate shows anisotropic properties and consequently the orientation distribution of the crystallites has a great influence on the anisotropy of the whole material. Secondly more than 90% of all crystalline materials have a preferred orientation of their crystallites.

HOLONS

Holography and neutron scattering HOLONS

HOLONS (Holography and Neutron Scattering) was designed and set into operation as a special sample environment for SANS-2 in a cooperation of the universities of Osnabrück and Vienna and GKSS. It is used to investigate the properties of materials which are of particular interest in photonics. Such media, e.g. photopolymers or photorefractive crystals, are of high relevance for data storage applications, integrated optical devices or as neutron optical elements like beam splitters, lenses or interferometers.

Poldi

Polarised neutron diffractometer POLDI

The polarised neutron diffractometer POLDI has been developed by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Braunschweig. It was first installed and operated at the PTB research reactor. After its shut down POLDI was set up and is now operated by PTB at the thermal neutron guide 7 of the FRG-1.

Sans-1

Small-angle scattering instrument SANS-1

SANS-1 has been designed for polarised neutron scattering from polarised targets. A powerful technique to study the structure is the variation of the scattering contrast with selected deuteration. It is primarily used for projects in molecular biology and soft matter science (colloids, polymers, macromolecules & membranes and biological systems).

Fss

Neutron time-of-flight spectrometer FSS (Fourier Strain Scanner)

FSS is a time-of-flight Fourier spectrometer with special design features for non-destructive characterisation of residual stresses in various polycrystalline materials, preferentially multiphase materials (fig.1). It is jointly operated with the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. The instrument is a correlation spectrometer, running in the so-called reverse time-of-flight (RTOF) mode.
