Focus on climate change – GKSS Annual Meeting in Kiel
On 19 June, Schleswig-Holstein’s largest non-university research institute, GKSS, held its Annual Meeting at the IfM-GEOMAR facility in Kiel. The event, which was attended by around 250 participants, was opened by Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister of Science, Economics and Transport, Dietrich Austermann. In his opening speech, the minister once again expressed his delight about the great research work conducted by the Research Centre’s approximately 800 employees in Geesthacht.

Hamburg’s citizens regard climate change as a great threat
61 per cent of Hamburg’s citizens believe climate change to be a great, or very great threat to the city, citing storm surges and flooding as possible climate-related natural disasters. This is the result of the forsa Study, which was commissioned by the scientists from the GKSS-Research Centre in Geesthacht.

Sustainable coastal protection strategies for the Wadden Sea
Scientists, conservationists and representatives of administrative bodies in Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany recently took part in an international workshop which focused on coastal protection and restoration measures in the Wadden Sea in the context of climate change. The event was organized by scientists from the German office of ENCORA, a European platform for coastal research. ENCORA Germany is based at the GKSS Research Centre in Geesthacht.

Seegang und Wetter im trüben Gelben Meer
Wissenschaftler des GKSS-Forschungszentrums aus Geesthacht ergänzen ein internationales Modell- und Beobachtungssystem für das Gelbe Meer zwischen China und Korea um einen wichtigen Umweltparameter: den Schwebstoffeintrag. Das gesamte System soll zu den Segelwettbewerben der Olympischen Spiele 2008 in China einsatzbereit sein. Es wird die Vorhersage der lokalen Wettersituation sowie des Wellengangs, der Gezeiten, der Wasserstände und der Strömungsverhältnisse ermöglichen. Durch den Beitrag der Helmholtz-Wissenschaftler der GKSS aus Geesthacht kann das Vorhersagesystem in Zukunft auch in den Bereichen Umweltschutz und Krisenmanagement eingesetzt werden.
