In Geesthacht, scientists work to develop new lightweight engineering materials based on magnesium and titanium aluminide alloys as well as innovative joining technologies along with composite and hybrid structures. This research makes vehicles and aircraft lighter, thus helping to save energy and conserve the world’s resources. At the same time, GKSS researchers are developing innovative metal alloys for the pioneering field of hydrogen and fuel cell technology. Likewise, unique testing methods involving the use of neutrons and synchrotron radiation serve to characterize materials in a non-destructive manner.

Institute of Polymer Research

Scientists in Geesthacht investigate areas including the use of membranes for the development of zero-emissions power plants and power generation from saltwater. They also develop functionalised membranes for use in fuel cell systems. Meanwhile, activities in Teltow focus on the development of biomaterials for the field of regenerative medicine.

Institute of Coastal Research

Coastal researchers in Geesthacht investigate the impact of global climate change on the regional level, particularly in northern Germany and the Baltic. They employ modern monitoring methods in coastal areas for this purpose and also enhance these on a continuous basis. Onboard the Ludwig and the MS Storch, GKSS researchers conduct on-the-spot surveys of water quality.
