Isopore membranes made in Geesthacht - a blessing for humankind?

In the December 2007 edition of “Nature Materials” the membrane researchers Dr. Klaus-Viktor Peinemann, Dr. Peter Simon and the director of the institute Prof. Dr. Volker Abetz published their work on “Asymmetric block copolymer membranes”. This membrane is made out of two layers: A thin isopore strictly ordered block copolymers layer and a directly subsequent disordered spongy layer out of the same material.

A commentator in the current edition of the international scientific magazine "Nature" takes up the issue again. Chemistry Professor Benny Freeman of the University of Texas at Austin sees great potential in this technology. Freeman describes the membrane made in Geesthacht
as a “holy grail” and a “blessing” for humankind. This technique can be used to clean water efficiently and cheaply from hepatitis viruses. Now the “Nature” article can be discussed in a blog.
